Friday June 20th
Hundreds of you showed up at Senator Haines' office to demonstrate.
Meanwhile, back in Trenton, the legislators met and an outcome was that the three pension-changing bills we've been lobbying against were dropped and replaced with a bill that included an increase in retirement age (for new hires) from 60 to 62 and raising the annual salary threshold to $7500.
Lobby Day, Monday, June 23rd
About a hundred members arrived in Trenton at 9 a.m. to lobby and watch the voting.
Voting on the proposed pension bill came up in both houses following passage of the Budget.
The bill passed in the Senate, but got hung up in the Assembly for four hours or so with an extraordinarily large number of votes for abstention.
In the end, some time after 11 p.m., the compromise bill passed in the Assembly as well.
The BCEA thanks all of our members who participated in the fight, writing, e-mailing, making phone calls, rallying, demonstrating, and supporting our cause and NJEA governance and staff for all they do for and with us.
Have a great summer!
